The essentials

How do I redact personal information from a PDF?

Upload a PDF with a text layer to PII Purge and select Redact PDF. The tool detects personal information, blacks out the detected areas and embedded images, and creates a new PDF from page images. Review every page before downloading and sharing it.

  1. Choose a PDF with selectable text, up to 50 pages and 25 MB.

  2. Select Redact PDF to find and remove detected personal information.

  3. Compare both versions, check every page and download the redacted copy.

Built for your workflow

Less manual work. More control.

Removed from the file

The output contains page images. The original text layer, metadata, bookmarks, attachments and form fields do not carry over, so text under a redaction cannot be extracted.

A useful first pass

Detection looks for people, organisations, places, contact details and ID numbers across the document. Review the result for anything missed or removed unnecessarily.

Familiar layout

The page layout is preserved with black bars over detected information. Embedded images, including photos, are also blacked out. Output text is no longer selectable or searchable.

A few helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

How do I redact a PDF for free?

Upload your PDF, select Redact PDF and review the result. You can redact one document a day without an account or a card. An account with a card includes 50 redactions a month before usage charges apply.

Can redacted text be recovered from the PDF?

Text beneath the black bars is not retained in the output. Each page is rebuilt as an image, with no original text layer to copy or extract. You should still review the pages for identifying information that was not detected.

Can I redact a scanned PDF?

Not yet. PII Purge requires a PDF with a text layer, such as one exported from Word or Google Docs. Image-only scanned pages are rejected because optical character recognition (OCR) is not supported.

What are the PDF limits?

Each PDF can contain up to 50 pages and be up to 25 MB. One successfully redacted PDF counts as one redaction, regardless of its page count within those limits.
