The essentials

How do I remove personal information from text?

Paste your text into PII Purge and select Redact text. Detected names, contact details, addresses, organisations and ID numbers are replaced with labels such as <PERSON> and <CONTACT>. Review the result for missed details before copying it.

  1. Paste your text, or try the example to see how it works.

  2. Select Redact text to replace detected personal information with labels.

  3. Review the output, then copy the redacted text.

Built for your workflow

Less manual work. More control.

Readable replacements

Labels such as <PERSON>, <BUSINESS> and <ID_NUMBER> show the type of information removed while leaving the surrounding text readable.

Detection in context

The pipeline reads the passage to identify people, organisations and places as well as familiar patterns such as email addresses. A human review still matters.

No content retention

Pasted text is processed in memory. It is not kept in content logs or used to train models; operational metadata records the request.

Context-aware detection

A few helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

What does PII mean?

PII stands for personally identifiable information: details that can identify a person on their own or in combination. Examples include names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, dates of birth and ID numbers.

How much text can I redact at once?

The text tool accepts up to 1 MB per request. Processing time depends on the length and content. For longer documents, use a supported PDF within the published upload limits.

Does the output preserve formatting?

Pasted text is treated as plain text. Detected items are replaced with labels, while text outside those items is retained. Use the PDF tool when you need to preserve a document's page layout.

Can I get the positions of removed items?

Yes. The text API returns the redacted text and each removed item's type, start and end position. Positions are Unicode code-point offsets into the original text.
